Inbox Fear

Thank you to all of you who've subscribed to receive my posts by e-mail. It means a huge about to me that you want to take time out of your day to read my ramblings.

However, I got an e-mail from a reader saying that she was horribly embarrassed whenever one of my mails hit her inbox as the title screamed out MUMMY WAS A SECRET DRINKER, which can be mortifying if someone spots it.

I totally get it, as I receive my own e-mails, so the same has happened to me.

One of my Godsons (aged 12) spotted my blog in my inbox once. "Mummy Was a Secret Drinker?" he read, quizzically.

I quickly changed screen, blushed like a beetroot, and said "It's just a blog I subscribe to. Totally CRAZY lady. Don't know why I read it!" Accompanied by eye roll and forced laugh.

The e-mail system is totally automated by a programme called Feedburner, so I'm not at all sure how to tinker with it, and I am a technical klutz. The fact that I managed to set this blog up at all is a miracle!

But I THINK I may have fixed it so my mails come through with the title A NEW POST FROM SM.

So this post is a test, and I'll let you know in the comments below if it worked.

If you'd like to receive my posts by mail, then go to the full website (if you're using a mobile device like smartphone or iPad then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on View Full Website). In the top right corner of the homepage you'll see a box titled 'Subscribe by mail'. Just put your e-mail address in there.

(Don't worry, your e-mail address is NOT public, and is NOT shared with anyone).

Fingers crossed.....

SM x

  2. Looks like the below should enable you to change the email subject to the post title, though from memory, some of those might raise an eyebrow or two if glanced at by 'outsiders'!

"login to your feed burner account and navigate to:
    > Publicize > Email subscription > Email branding
There change the title of your feed to:
    ${latestItemTitle}

But, I think you'll still have the 'Mummy was a secret drinker' showing as the 'From' name...

Good luck (let me know if it doesn't work and we'll see how else you can get around it)

    2. There's a better step-by-step guide to changing it at the below link (Mack Collier has lots of helpful info for blogging etc; his Twitter feed is good, too - though his hat's a bit iffy ;)

      http://mackcollier.com/feedburner-email-subscriptions/

And in the comments, explains how you can change the 'From' name that shows for your email updates, too:

"in your Feedburner account click on the Publicize tab and then Communication Preferences and make sure the From field is your email and not FrannysFootstepsFrannysFootsteps."

Guess you'd still want to use something that people will associate with you, but I expect even 'SM' would do that, especially if you sent an update before you changed it explaining what you were changing it to.

  3. Thanks for thinking of this SM, I've made up various far-fetched tales when one or another of my children have spotted your much looked-forward-to email on my phone. In case it's not possible to change it, anyone using gmail on a desktop can move the emails to the Social folder, and then it's not on the default front screen that comes up. Handy for people bursting into my office at work! But you are my lifeline, so if it has to stay the same, you're worth having to think on my feet and make up weird explanations! Thanks again xxx

  6. That is a great idea SM. My children (age 8 and 10) think the heading is hilarious - they have no idea what it really means thank goodness - it sends them into peels of laughter, but I die a little every time. My husband is visibly pained when this happens too. Arghhh, the joys of drinking eh!

Well done Curly for getting to day one! I'm still on day 0.

  7. Thank you for starting this blog SM. I recently began reading it from the beginning, have caught up with the posts and can finally comment. I've tried moderation and it simply doesn't work for me. The last "sip" I had lead to a three day binge. I'm back on day one, but somehow it feels different this time. I'm hoping the "field of bunnies" you posted about are somewhere on my horizon. You are an amazing writer with the best readers, as I like to read all of their comments as well. I just signed up to receive the email.
