Carpe Diem?

I've spent an awful lot of time since I quit drinking thinking about the time I've wasted.

Time that I can't even remember. Time feeling 'under par'. Time squandered endlessly planning, and waiting for, the next drinking opportunity.

Because of this, and my recent brush with mortality, I've spent the last few months desperately trying to shovel as much into each day as I can - to carpe diem.

But today, in Cornwall, it's raining. Not cats and dogs, but a steady drizzle, a fine mist, like God's own giant Evian spritzer.

(Note that, in the same way that Eskimos have hundreds of words for 'snow', we Brits have many and varied ways to describe 'rain'.)

So I looked out of the window at the crashing waves and persistent precipitation and.....went back to bed with the newspaper.

The husband came in, took one look at me, and muttered "what's the opposite of 'carpe'?"

But the truth is that sometimes seizing the day means seizing the opportunity to do absolutely bugger all.

Hurrah!

Love SM x

  1. As we say in these parts, SM, 'you betcha!' (That would be - enthusiastic agreement.) In fact, I'm reading today's post...in bed! Putting off starting a sunny day.

  2. Isn't it really lovely to relax rather than just recover? Enjoy your holidays. X

  3. You're back in my neck of the woods again and I remember saying that last year when you posted. If I had stopped drinking then (as was the plan) I would have hit the 365 already. Nothing wrong with seizing the opportunity to stay in bed with a book, blood, papers or even Mr SM.
In Cornwall that very fine misty rain is called "Mizzle", it was a new one on me when I moved here.

  4. Yes! Sometimes taking time for ourselves to just be is just that - seizing the day.

  5. Totally agree, you are still in the moment, even under the duvet.....in Scotland we call it Scotch Mist....I used to be so driven that only when drinking did I feel justified in not doing something...housework, garden my chores or what everyone expected of me...now i just take the time when I need it...and have the happy knowledge, that in a few hours I will still be capable of picking up where I left off, if I choose or need to....enjoy...

  10. I love "bugger it all days"! I'm probaby the only person who frowns when the sun comes out after a good rain. We don't have to seize every day, we can leave some for others.
